Seattle police are investigating a shooting near Greenwood on Tuesday night that left a 15-year-old boy with a serious gunshot wound to the torso, with early witness accounts later contradicted by information suggesting the shot was fired accidentally inside the vehicle the boy was traveling in.

Officers were called to the area of North 93rd Street and Aurora Avenue North at approximately 10:47 p.m. on 23 June before being redirected to the sidewalk at 10507 Aurora Avenue North, where Seattle Fire Department medics were already treating the victim. The boy was stabilized at the scene and transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.

Initial witness reports described the victim as standing on the sidewalk when a dark colored sedan pulled up and a passenger fired multiple shots before the vehicle fled in an unknown direction. That account shifted significantly in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Information received through SPD’s Real Time Crime Center pointed to a different sequence of events. According to the updated account, the shooting occurred inside the vehicle rather than on the sidewalk. A passenger in the back seat was handling a handgun when it discharged, accidentally striking the boy, who was driving. The shooter then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The wounded driver continued for several more blocks before stopping when he spotted Seattle Fire Department crews on an unrelated call nearby. When he got out to seek help from the firefighters, several other passengers fled from the vehicle. Investigators said this version of events was more consistent with the Real Time Crime Center information.

Detectives from the Gun Violence Reduction Unit are leading the investigation and working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
