Christian Salyer, a 30-year-old teacher at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in Seattle, has died following a bicycle collision in the Yesler Terrace neighbourhood, leaving his school community in mourning and prompting an outpouring of remembrance from colleagues, students, and families.
Salyer was riding his bicycle on Monday, 1 June, when he was involved in a collision with a vehicle. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he died on Wednesday. Police determined the crash was an accident. Further details about the circumstances of the collision have not been released.

Thurgood Marshall Principal Julie Breidenbach notified families and staff of Salyer’s passing in a letter sent Wednesday morning. “Christian was a dedicated teacher who served our school with passion and care for many years,” Breidenbach wrote. “He made a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and families alike. His warmth, dedication, and commitment to education will be deeply missed.”
Breidenbach said the school community will look for meaningful ways to honour Salyer’s memory in the coming weeks and when students return in the autumn. District staff were made available at the school to support students and colleagues through the grieving process. The principal encouraged families to speak openly with their children about the loss and offered guidance on how to approach conversations about death with young people, including using clear language and allowing children to express their feelings.
Additional mental health support is available through school counsellors and the Seattle Public Schools Mental Health Services webpage. Families seeking guidance on helping children cope with loss can also access resources through the National Association of School Psychologists and the Dougy Centre.
