Alaska Airlines commences nonstop flights that go from Seattle to Europe, adding to a growing list of destinations that span across the continents from its hometown.

It includes new destinations such as Athens, Greece and Paris which mark the airlines sixth and seventh nonstop long haul routes from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and forms part of long term goals to turn Seattle into a “global gateway”. It also plans to introduce at least 12 new trans-Pacific routes by year 2030.

Alaska Air Group’s recent acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines contributes a large part of reasoning for the wide expansion plan. The acquisition added a fleet of widebody planes and new resources to Alaska’s arsenal. The Alaskan Air group now includes Alaska, Hawaiin, regional carrier Horizon Air and ground support company McGee Air Service. The airline has already launched routes to Tokyo, Seoul, London, Rome and Reykjavik.

Alaska says Paris and Athens were among the most requested destinations by its loyalty-program members. The new routes strengthen its presence in the competitive Seattle market and mark another step toward its goal of building a broader long-haul international network.
