Alaska Airlines is set to launch a non-stop flight connecting Seattle to Europe by 2026, according to CEO Ben Minicucci. This announcement marks a significant step in the airline’s global expansion strategy. While the specific European destination has not been disclosed, the move aligns with Alaska’s broader plan to establish Seattle as a major international hub.
The decision to enter the European market follows Alaska’s recent merger with Hawaiian Airlines, which has provided the airline with access to a fleet of widebody aircraft, including Airbus A330s and Boeing 787-9s. These aircraft will facilitate the long-haul flights necessary for transatlantic service. Alaska’s long-term goal is to operate at least 12 non-stop international routes from Seattle by 2030, with destinations such as London, Paris, and Rome being considered.
CEO Ben Minicucci emphasized the importance of taking calculated risks to remain competitive in the evolving airline industry. He cited the airline’s successful introduction of non-stop service to Belize in 2021 as an example of Alaska’s willingness to explore new markets. The Belize route exceeded expectations, with passenger numbers tripling since its inception.
The upcoming European route is expected to cater to both leisure and business travelers, capitalizing on the strong demand for international travel from the Pacific Northwest. Alaska Airlines plans to maintain its separate brand identity from Hawaiian Airlines, despite the merger, to preserve the unique value each brand offers to its customers.
