A political fight is intensifying in Washington after opponents of the state’s new tax on high-income earners submitted enough signatures to place a repeal measure before voters in November.

If certified, the initiative would ask voters whether to overturn the recently approved 9.9% tax on annual household income exceeding $1 million.

Supporters, including Gov. Bob Ferguson, argue the tax is needed to generate billions of dollars for education, tax relief and other public services while making the state’s tax system more equitable.

Opponents, led by the political group Let’s Go Washington, contend the measure could discourage investment and eventually pave the way for a broader state income tax.

The Secretary of State is verifying the submitted signatures before the proposal can officially qualify for the November ballot.

If approved by voters, the initiative would repeal the tax before it takes effect in 2028.
