In response to a dramatic rise in speeding across the city, the Bellevue Police Department has intensified patrols to curb dangerous driving. The move comes after officers recorded a 163% increase in speeding violations from January to April 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.
This surge has prompted the department to launch a weekend-long speed enforcement campaign, targeting reckless drivers and illegal vehicle modifications that disrupt community safety.

Targeted Weekend Patrols Begin
Beginning May 3, the Bellevue Police Department began emphasis patrols in known hotspots for traffic violations. The initiative targets:
- Excessive speeding
- Street racing
- Loud and modified mufflers
- Distracted driving
The crackdown follows a tragic incident on May 2, when an 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed at NE 8th Street and 116th Avenue NE. Initial investigations suggest that speed was a contributing factor. Bellevue PD official blog details the patrol strategy and ongoing public safety efforts.
Speeding Violations See Alarming Spike
Between January and April 2024, only 380 speeding citations were issued. In 2025, that number skyrocketed to 998 in the same period. This uptick has raised red flags for both law enforcement and local residents concerned about road safety.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a vehicle traveling at 60 mph requires nearly 300 feet to come to a complete stop—distance that increases exponentially at higher speeds.
Community Asked to Assist

- Aggressive or erratic driving
