Cloudy Skies Over Seattle – Here’s Why

If you woke up in Seattle today wondering why the sky is still covered in clouds, you’re not alone. April has arrived, but the sunshine feels like it’s still on hold. So, what’s going on with Seattle’s weather today—and why does it still feel like mid-winter outside?

Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening with Seattle’s cloudy weather today, and why gray skies are such a stubborn part of life in the Pacific Northwest.

Today’s Forecast: More Gray, Less Rain

As of April 8, Seattle is experiencing overcast skies with a high chance of light drizzle or scattered showers. While temperatures are slowly inching upward, the persistent cloud cover remains. So why is that?

It comes down to a mix of marine moisture, regional geography, and seasonal transitions that make April feel like a coin toss between winter and spring.

Marine Layer + Moisture Flow = Cloudy Skies

Much of Seattle’s weather today is shaped by the marine layer—a blanket of cool, moist air from the Pacific Ocean. This layer tends to settle over the Puget Sound region, especially during spring mornings.

  • Today, that marine layer has been reinforced by a low-pressure system, which is pushing more moisture inland.
  • That moist air rises and condenses as it meets the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges, forming thick, stubborn clouds.

So even if it’s not pouring rain, Seattle stays damp, gray, and cool.

Spring in Seattle: A Cloudy Transition

April is a classic transitional month for the Pacific Northwest. While other parts of the country start to see consistent sunshine, Seattle often experiences:

  • Lingering jet stream activity, which pulls in waves of cloud systems.
  • Unstable air masses, leading to alternating days of sunshine, rain, and—you guessed it—clouds.
  • Temperatures that aren’t warm enough to break through inversions, allowing clouds to hang around for hours or even the whole day.

That’s exactly what’s playing out today: a mild, cloudy afternoon with short bursts of light rain.

Will It Get Better This Week?

Forecast models suggest some clearing later this week, especially in the afternoons. But Seattleites know to take it one day at a time when it comes to the sun.

Expect:

  • Patchy clouds and sunbreaks by Thursday or Friday
  • Potential dry spells in the afternoons
  • Continued cloudy mornings through the weekend

Bottom Line

Seattle is cloudy today because of a combination of marine air, mountain geography, and springtime jet stream shifts. It’s nothing unusual—but it can be frustrating when you’re ready for some sun.

Until the clouds clear, keep your rain jacket handy, grab a warm coffee, and know that brighter skies are (eventually) on the way.
