A domestic violence incident in Puyallup took a tragic turn when a 46-year-old man died after a tense standoff with police. Investigators say the situation began when the suspect allegedly forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, assaulted her, and fled before officers arrived.

After tracking the man to a property near Sumner, officers spent more than an hour trying to persuade him to surrender peacefully. Police used negotiators and aerial surveillance as they worked to bring the situation under control without violence.

The standoff escalated when the suspect reportedly came outside but refused to comply with officers’ instructions. As police moved in to take him into custody, he detonated an explosive device, killing himself at the scene and shocking responding officers.

The explosion led to four police officers and a K-9 being taken for medical evaluation. Authorities later said there were no reports of serious injuries, while investigators continued examining the scene to determine exactly what type of explosive device was used.
