Seattle-based travel technology giant Expedia Group is continuing its corporate restructuring efforts with a new round of workforce reductions, confirming plans to eliminate 58 positions at its headquarters on Expedia Group Way.

The permanent layoffs were officially disclosed through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with Washington State’s Employment Security Department, with the affected roles scheduled for termination between November 21 and December 1.

The latest action targets a broad spectrum of specialized functions across the organization, directly impacting software engineers, data scientists, finance managers, and senior executives.

The announcement marks Expedia’s second major wave of Seattle-based job cuts this year, following a significant operational downsizing in January that eliminated a total of 162 local positions.

That earlier round struck the company’s technology division particularly hard, wiping out an estimated 10 percent of its tech workforce in roles ranging from engineers and product managers to directors and the Vice President of Experience Design.

Addressing the ongoing organizational changes, an Expedia spokesperson explained that the company is actively simplifying its internal management hierarchy and streamlining operations.

The company noted that while certain positions are being permanently eliminated, new roles are simultaneously being opened as leadership evaluates the specific skill sets required for its long-term corporate strategy.

Executives also said that select job functions currently based in Seattle may ultimately be relocated to other operational hubs or outsourced to third-party contractors.

The impending job cuts land amidst a broader ongoing transformation for the online travel agency, which maintained a global workforce of roughly 16,500 employees at the close of 2024, including approximately 3,300 workers in the Puget Sound region.

As news of the notice spread, numerous impacted local employees began sharing updates regarding their upcoming departures across professional networking platforms like LinkedIn. Expressing gratitude for the outgoing staff, Expedia emphasized that the restructuring decisions, while difficult, remain a necessary discipline in an evolving tech and travel landscape.
