A Vancouver father died and his 6-year-old son remains in critical condition after a suspected impaired driver struck them in a crosswalk Wednesday afternoon, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
The collision occurred around 1:20 p.m. in the 6400 block of Northeast 137th Avenue when officers responded to reports of a vehicle striking pedestrians in a crosswalk.
First responders discovered the father dead in the roadway, while his young son was found approximately 10 feet away in a nearby ditch. Emergency medical personnel transported the child to Randall Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he remains in critical condition.
The 73-year-old male driver remained at the crash scene and was taken into custody. Police arrested the suspect on charges including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
Investigators believe speed, reckless driving, and possible impairment contributed to the fatal collision. The Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Unit is leading the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety in crosswalks, particularly involving impaired drivers. Vancouver has implemented various traffic safety measures in recent years, though pedestrian fatalities continue to occur across the metropolitan area.
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or the suspect as the investigation continues. The case will likely proceed through both criminal court proceedings and potential civil litigation related to the fatal collision.
The tragedy underscores the devastating consequences of impaired driving, which remains a leading cause of traffic fatalities despite decades of prevention campaigns and enhanced enforcement efforts.
The 6-year-old’s condition at Randall Children’s Hospital represents the family’s focus as they cope with losing a father while hoping for their child’s recovery from severe injuries.
