A fire tore through a building under construction in Tacoma late Monday night, destroying the structure and damaging two neighboring apartment buildings.

Tacoma Fire crews responded around 10 p.m. to the blaze on South Puget Sound Avenue, near South Tacoma Way. By the time firefighters got it under control roughly three hours later, the building under construction had been reduced to a burned-out shell, and both nearby apartment buildings had suffered roof damage. Neighbors captured video showing heavy smoke as crews worked to knock down the flames.

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue and West Pierce Fire and Rescue assisted with other emergency calls in the area while Tacoma crews focused on the fire. Investigators haven’t yet determined a cause, and fire crews are expected to remain on scene for 24 hours to watch for any flare-ups.
