Four people died and multiple others sustained injuries in a shooting at a child’s birthday celebration in Stockton, California, on Saturday evening, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities responded to reports of gunfire at a banquet hall shortly after 6 p.m., discovering a scene with numerous casualties. Emergency personnel transported several victims to area hospitals for treatment, though officials have not disclosed the exact number of wounded or details about their current conditions.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a total of 14 victims from the incident, with four fatalities and 10 others injured to varying degrees. Investigators have not released the identities of those killed or injured, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need to notify families.

A Public Information Officer from the Sheriff’s Office indicated that investigators believe the shooting may have been targeted rather than random, though authorities have not elaborated on what evidence supports this assessment or who the intended targets might have been.

Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee confirmed via social media that the shooting occurred at a child’s birthday party, adding a particularly tragic dimension to the violence. The targeting of a children’s celebration has shocked the community and raised questions about the circumstances that led to such an attack.

“Tonight, my heart is heavy in a way that’s hard to put into words. As Vice Mayor of Stockton and as someone who grew up in this community, I am devastated and angry to learn about the mass shooting at a child’s birthday party,” Lee wrote in a Facebook post.

The vice mayor emphasized his commitment to seeking answers about the incident and supporting affected families. “I am in contact with staff and public safety officials to understand exactly what happened, and I will be pushing for answers. Our community deserves to know the truth, and the families impacted deserve justice and every resource available to support them,” Lee stated.

Law enforcement officials designated the banquet hall and surrounding area as an active crime scene, with investigators working through the evening to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and reconstruct the sequence of events. Such complex scenes require methodical processing to preserve evidence that might identify shooters and establish motive.

The shooting adds to Stockton’s ongoing struggles with gun violence. The Central Valley city of approximately 320,000 residents has experienced periodic spikes in violent crime, though a mass shooting at a children’s event represents an unusually brazen and tragic incident even by local standards.

Banquet halls hosting private celebrations present particular challenges for security. Unlike public venues with metal detectors and security screening, private event spaces typically rely on guest lists and minimal security measures, making them vulnerable to individuals intent on violence.

The timing shortly after 6 p.m. suggests the party was likely in full swing, with children and families gathered for cake, games, and celebration when gunfire erupted. Witnesses at such chaotic scenes often provide conflicting accounts as they process traumatic experiences, complicating initial investigative efforts.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed whether suspects have been identified or apprehended. The lack of information about suspects raises questions about whether shooters fled the scene before law enforcement arrival or whether the investigation has not yet identified clear suspects.

The characterization of the shooting as potentially targeted suggests investigators have information pointing toward specific intended victims rather than indiscriminate violence. This assessment could come from witness statements, the pattern of injuries, or other evidence collected at the scene.

Stockton’s location in California’s Central Valley, roughly 80 miles east of San Francisco, places it at the intersection of several major transportation corridors. The city has experienced economic challenges and periods of high crime rates, though community leaders have worked to implement violence prevention programs.

The victims transported to hospitals likely went to multiple facilities given the number of casualties. San Joaquin General Hospital and other regional trauma centers would have activated mass casualty protocols to handle the influx of gunshot victims requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Families attending what should have been a joyful celebration instead experienced unimaginable trauma. Children present at the party may require extensive psychological support to process witnessing such violence, while adults grapple with grief, anger, and questions about how such an attack could occur.

Community response to the shooting will likely include vigils, calls for increased gun violence prevention measures, and demands for answers about how the attack unfolded. Vice Mayor Lee’s promise to push for transparency reflects public expectations that officials will provide comprehensive information once the investigation permits.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office continues gathering information and has not provided a timeline for when additional details might be released. Investigators balance the public’s need for information against the investigative necessity of withholding certain facts that might compromise the case or ongoing manhunt if suspects remain at large.
