Four significant earthquakes struck different parts of the world within an eight-hour window on Wednesday, with the most devastating occurring in Venezuela, where back-to-back major tremors killed at least 164 people, injured nearly 1,000 more, and caused catastrophic damage across the country.

While earthquakes occur continuously around the globe as tectonic plates shift, the magnitude and concentration of these events within such a short time frame has drawn the attention of seismologists worldwide.

Northern California — 5.6 Magnitude, 8:10 a.m. PT

The sequence began in Northern California, where a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck with its epicentre less than seven miles north of Redwood Valley. More than 5,000 people felt the quake, with reports of shaking stretching from San Francisco to Eureka. Some residents reported minor structural damage including cracked walls, caved-in roof sections, and fallen household items. Four aftershocks followed the initial event.

Venezuela — 7.2 and 7.5 Magnitude, 3:04 p.m. PT

The most destructive event of the day came in Venezuela, where two massive earthquakes struck just 39 seconds apart. The US Geological Survey recorded the first quake at 7.2 magnitude and the second at 7.5, both striking within seconds of each other at 3:04 p.m. PT. In a rare red alert statement, the USGS warned that “high casualties and extensive damage are probable, and the disaster is likely widespread.”

As of 7:30 a.m. Thursday, at least 164 people were confirmed dead and nearly 1,000 injured. Officials described the twin quakes as among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century. President Donald Trump said via social media that the United States is prepared to assist with the ongoing disaster response.

Japan — 6.9 Magnitude, 3:30 p.m. PT

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 18 miles east of Kuji on Japan’s northern coast at around 3:30 p.m. PT, with the epicentre recorded at a depth of 31.6 miles beneath the seafloor. Despite the quake occurring in the sea, no tsunami warning was issued and no serious injuries were reported.

For Seattle residents, Wednesday’s global seismic activity is a reminder of the Pacific Northwest’s own earthquake vulnerability. The region sits above the Cascadia Subduction Zone, capable of producing a magnitude 9.0 or greater earthquake, and multiple active fault lines run directly beneath the city.
