Drivers traveling through the Cascade Mountains should prepare for significant disruptions as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) begins permanent repairs to a flood-damaged section of U.S. Highway 2 near Leavenworth.
Following directive from WSDOT, The highway will be fully closed for four days between mileposts 85 and 99, beginning Monday through Thursday, allowing crews to carry out extensive repair geared towards preventive damage control caused by last December’s flooding.
Heavy flooding last winter washed out sections of Highway 2 between Stevens Pass and Leavenworth, forcing a lengthy closure that disrupted travel and impacted local businesses. Crews later reopened the roadway after completing temporary emergency repairs, but transportation officials say a permanent solution is now needed.
WSDOT said the dry summer weather provides the best opportunity to complete the project before winter conditions return.
Although the full highway closure is scheduled to end Thursday, travelers should continue to expect delays throughout the remainder of the month.
Beginning Friday, July 17, traffic will be reduced to a single lane between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with flaggers and pilot cars directing vehicles through the work zone. Similar traffic controls are expected Monday through Thursday for the rest of July. WSDOT noted that the schedule could change if weather conditions interfere with construction.
Transportation officials are encouraging motorists to plan for extra travel time, consider alternate routes where possible, and stay updated on changing road conditions as crews work to complete the critical infrastructure repairs.
