Swedish furniture retailer IKEA will open a new compact store concept in Redmond this winter, bringing the company’s second western Washington location to King County after a 30-year gap.
The IKEA Plan and Order Point with Pick-up store will operate within Redmond Town Center, offering a different experience from the traditional warehouse-style format. The new concept focuses on personalised design consultations with IKEA planners and one-on-one meetings with store team members.
“I’m beyond excited to welcome customers at IKEA Redmond this winter,” said Ken Bodeen, IKEA Renton Market Manager. “The IKEA Redmond Plan and order point with Pick-up brings our signature styles closer to the community, making it more accessible, more convenient, and of course, more affordable.”
The store will feature an onsite pickup location where customers can schedule collection of orders at their convenience. However, the location will not include IKEA’s popular restaurant or famous Swedish meatballs, representing a departure from the full-service model at the Renton store.
IKEA’s first western Washington location opened in Renton in 1994, making the Redmond store the region’s second outpost after three decades. The smaller format reflects IKEA’s strategy to expand into urban markets where large warehouse stores may not be feasible.
The company announced it will commemorate the opening with a $25,000 donation of home furnishing items to Plymouth Housing, a local organisation addressing homelessness. “Their mission to eliminate homelessness and address its causes by preserving, developing and operating safe, quality, supportive housing aligns with our vision to create a better everyday life at home for the many people,” Bodeen stated.
The Redmond location represents IKEA’s adaptation to changing retail preferences, offering design services and convenient pickup options without requiring customers to navigate a full-scale warehouse store. The format may appeal to customers seeking IKEA’s design expertise without the time commitment of a traditional store visit.
