Man Arrested After Downtown Attack; Seattle Police Are Investigating as a Hate Crime

Seattle police arrested a 40-year-old man Tuesday night following what they are investigating to be an act of hate crime where two men were attacked further downtown. Officers were called to the area of 8th Avenue and Stewart Street just after 9 p.m. following reports of an assault.

According to police, the two victims, aged 24 and 25, were walking when the man threw a bottle containing an unknown liquid at them. When they turned around, he directed homophobic and racial slurs at them and then assaulted them physically. The two men were able to pin him to the ground and stall while successfully calling 911 before officers arrived.

Police said officers made the arrest after speaking with the victims and a witness and canvassing the area for video. The man was booked into King County Jail, and the case has been assigned to the Seattle Police Department’s Bias Crimes Coordinator.
