A 20-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot multiple times while sitting in his car in North Seattle early this morning, the latest violent incident in an area that has seen escalating gun violence.

Seattle police responded to reports of gunfire near the 1000 block of North 98th Street at 12:45 a.m. Officers found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside his vehicle near the intersection with Aurora Avenue North. They provided emergency treatment until Seattle Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported him to Harborview Medical Center, where he is being prepared for surgery.

Police say multiple suspects opened fire on the victim while he sat in his car, then fled in a vehicle before officers arrived. The circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear. Investigators have not said whether this appears to be a targeted attack, a robbery attempt, or mistaken identity.

The involvement of multiple shooters and their coordinated escape in a vehicle suggests some level of planning. Random drive-by shootings typically involve single shooters or opportunistic violence. When multiple people arrive armed and flee together, that pattern often indicates either targeted violence or gang-related activity.

The Aurora Avenue corridor has seen persistent violent crime, including shootings, assaults, and robberies. The area attracts crime partly because of its geography: a major north-south arterial with commercial strips, motels, and mixed-use development that creates both foot traffic and isolation. Police presence fluctuates, and response times vary depending on how many calls officers are handling across North Seattle.

For residents near North 98th Street and Aurora, this shooting adds to concerns about safety in an area where gunfire has become more common. The question for investigators is whether this incident connects to other recent violence or represents an isolated attack.
