A multi-agency manhunt is underway in Lewis and Thurston counties for a 27-year-old armed fugitive accused of opening fire on law enforcement with an AR-15 during a high-speed pursuit near the Chehalis Western Trail.

The suspect, identified as Damien Madison, is considered armed and extremely dangerous, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO). Madison is wanted on multiple felony warrants, including charges related to a prior drive-by shooting and first-degree assault.

The most recent incident occurred on Thursday when deputies attempted to stop a vehicle in which Madison was a passenger. Authorities say Madison directed the driver to flee the scene, sparking a pursuit through rural Thurston County. During the chase, he allegedly threw objects at patrol vehicles in an attempt to disable them, before firing several rounds from an AR-15-style rifle. One patrol car was struck multiple times, with a deputy narrowly avoiding injury by less than a foot.

Madison was last seen near the Chehalis Western Trail in the area of Waldrick Road and Stedman Road. He was reportedly wearing a black T-shirt, sunglasses, and a black baseball cap with a red bill at the time. Deputies believe he may still be in the vicinity and have set up search perimeters in surrounding neighborhoods and wooded areas.

According to law enforcement, this is not the first time Madison has led deputies on a dangerous pursuit. A spokesperson for TCSO told KOMO News that Madison has evaded arrest on multiple occasions and has been on their radar for several years. The department has previously warned the courts that without stricter consequences, Madison would continue to escalate his criminal behavior.

Described as 5 feet tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds, with dark hair and brown eyes, Madison remains at large. Authorities are urging residents in the area to remain vigilant and avoid any contact with the suspect. Anyone who sees Madison or has information on his whereabouts is urged to call 911 immediately. The public is strongly advised not to approach him.

Law enforcement continues to canvass the area using K9 units, drones, and aerial support in an effort to bring Madison into custody safely.
