Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has ordered the CCTV cameras installed around the Stadium District to be switched off, now that the city’s run hosting World Cup matches has come to a close.

The cameras went up ahead of Seattle’s six World Cup matches after a contentious debate over their use, with Wilson ultimately siding with the Seattle Police Department to keep them running through the tournament, citing credible safety threats tied to the large World Cup crowds. With Monday’s Belgium-USA match marking the city’s final hosting duty, the cameras have now been turned back off.

In a statement Tuesday, Wilson’s office said the cameras will stay off until the city completes an audit expected this fall reviewing how the cameras and the broader Real Time Crime Center network are used, along with the data they collect. Once that audit is public, the city says it will weigh next steps on any future expansion of camera coverage. Wilson noted that cameras already operating in the Downtown Core, Chinatown-International District and North Aurora, in place since last year, will remain on.
