Meta has announced a significant wave of artificial intelligence features for Facebook, including a new AI-powered search mode, photo editing tools, and personalised creator assistance, as the company accelerates its push to make the platform more useful and harder to leave.

The headline addition is AI Mode, a new way to search Facebook that uses Meta AI to generate synthesised answers drawn from public posts, Groups, and Reels across the platform. Rather than scrolling through a list of search results, users can ask questions in plain language and receive a single summarized response based on what people are actually discussing on the platform. The approach mirrors similar features introduced by Google, though it raises the same fundamental question: how reliable are answers generated from public posts and unverified group discussions rather than vetted sources? The risk of outdated or misleading information slipping through synthesised answers is real, and it is a concern that has already been raised about comparable features elsewhere.

AI Mode follows Meta’s quiet launch last month of Forum, a Reddit-style app that includes its own Ask tab allowing users to pose questions and receive answers pulled from conversations happening across Facebook Groups. Together, the two products signal Meta’s intent to position itself as a place people go not just to scroll but to find answers.

Beyond search, Facebook has added photo presets powered by AI that allow users to change their appearance in images, swapping out clothes, hairstyles, and accessories without picking up a camera. Sports fans can virtually wear team jerseys by tapping the AI Edit icon in Stories and selecting the Wear It option, or by choosing Restyle Profile Picture with AI from their profile page. New editing tools for video also let users experiment with collage cutouts and transition effects for video montages.

The Monday announcement adds to a string of AI features Meta has shipped on Facebook in recent months. In February the company introduced animated profile pictures that bring still photos to life. In March it added an AI feature to Facebook Marketplace that automatically replies to buyer messages on sellers’ behalf. Earlier this month, Facebook launched an AI assistant for creators that suggests optimal posting times and summarizes audience comments based on a creator’s performance history.

The cumulative picture is of a company using AI features as a mechanism to make Facebook more indispensable at a moment when it faces growing competition for attention. The feature rollouts are running in parallel with Meta’s recently launched global subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, starting at $3.99 per month, with additional AI-focused subscription tiers reportedly in development. As Seattle Today previously reported, Meta is also expanding its Teen Accounts feature and deploying AI to detect underage users across its platforms.
