The Museum of History and Industry will open a new exhibition on 3 July exploring the evolving meaning of the American flag through art, artefacts, historic photographs, and personal stories, timed to coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary and running through 15 November.

For Which It Stands: The Many Threads of the American Flag invites visitors to consider how the flag has functioned as a symbol across vastly different moments in American history, from expressions of unity and patriotism to acts of protest, mourning, and political dissent. The exhibition draws on MOHAI’s own collections alongside contributions from community partners to present a wide-ranging and deliberately complex portrait of what the flag has meant to different people at different points in time.

Among the objects on display is a burial flag belonging to a Japanese American soldier who served in the 442nd Infantry Regiment during World War II, a unit that became one of the most decorated in US military history despite the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans on the home front. Also featured is a flag recovered from the wreckage of the 2014 Oso landslide in Washington state, and a flag carried by the American rowing team, the Boys in the Boat, at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

“Throughout history and modern-day America, the flag has continually evoked feelings, pride, debate and reflection,” said MOHAI Executive Director Leonard Garfield. “With this exhibit we hope visitors will consider what the flag has represented, what it means today, and what it means for future generations.”

The exhibition also includes participatory elements. Visitors can honor fallen service members, write their own version of the Pledge of Allegiance, and contribute to a collective textile artwork created by a local fiber artist, weaving their own threads into a shared piece that grows throughout the exhibition’s run.

For Which It Stands opens during a summer of America250 programming at MOHAI. At the end of July the museum will also open Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation, making MOHAI a significant regional destination for commemorations of the country’s 250th anniversary.

The exhibition is included in general MOHAI admission. More information is available at mohai.org.
