One worker is dead and nine others remain unaccounted for after a massive chemical tank rupture at a pulp and paper mill in Longview, Washington on Tuesday morning, triggering a large-scale emergency response that brought together local fire crews, the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, the National Guard, and Washington’s governor to the scene.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. at Nippon Dynawave Packaging, located at 3401 Industrial Way. Crews initially responded to reports of an explosion before determining the incident involved the rupture of a tank containing white liquor, a highly corrosive chemical mixture used in the paper-making process and composed of sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, and disodium carbonate. The tank, originally believed to hold 80,000 gallons, was found to contain approximately 900,000 gallons of the substance. Fire officials estimate roughly 90,000 gallons remain in the damaged structure.
One employee was killed and nine others remain missing. One firefighter and eight site personnel were transported to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical, including chemical burns and inhalation injuries. The identities of the deceased and the missing have not been released. Authorities initially reported multiple fatalities but have confirmed only one death as the search continues.
The immediate perimeter around the facility has been locked down. Authorities are instructing residents and the public to stay away from Industrial Way and all surrounding access points while rescue teams manage the scene. Officials said there is no immediate threat to the broader surrounding community.
Governor Bob Ferguson activated state emergency management resources and called in the National Guard to assist with the response. He said he is travelling to Longview to meet with officials on the ground. “I’m praying for the victims and families involved,” Ferguson said. State officials held a press conference Tuesday evening attended by Ferguson, Senator Patty Murray, Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, and other political leaders.
US Senator Maria Cantwell issued a statement expressing devastation at the news. “My heart is with the workers, families, and entire Longview community as they wait for updates about their loved ones,” Cantwell said. “I’m grateful to the first responders who are on the scene working to keep people safe.”
Longview Fire Battalion Chief Mike Gorsuch addressed the public during an afternoon press conference. “This is a tragic incident for our community. Our thoughts remain with the victims, their families, co-workers, and everyone who has been impacted by it,” Gorsuch said.
The cause of the chemical rupture remains under investigation.
