One person died and another was injured early Tuesday morning when a motorcycle crashed after apparently striking an animal near Maple Valley.

Deputies responded to reports of a motorcycle crash near 25600 SE 216th Street after 1 a.m. and found two people and a motorcycle down on the roadway.

Investigators believe the motorcycle struck an animal, possibly a deer, while traveling on 216th Street. One person died at the scene, while the second person was transported to Harborview Medical Center with unknown condition.

Deputies closed the roadway for several hours to investigate the crash.

Animal-vehicle collisions represent ongoing hazards on rural and semi-rural Washington roads, particularly during dawn and dusk hours when deer and other wildlife are most active. Motorcyclists face heightened risks in such collisions due to lack of protective vehicle structures.

The crash occurred in an area where residential development meets forested terrain, creating conditions where wildlife frequently crosses roadways. SE 216th Street serves as a connecting route between Maple Valley and surrounding communities, carrying both local and through traffic.

King County Sheriff’s Office investigators will determine contributing factors in the fatal crash, including speed, road conditions, and circumstances of the animal encounter.
