A 66-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run collision early Saturday on the SR-99 to Spokane Street off-ramp, with police arresting a suspect shortly after the incident.

The Seattle Department of Transportation received reports of an object on the off-ramp, prompting the Seattle Response Team to investigate. Upon arrival, responders discovered an unresponsive man and immediately called for police and Seattle Fire Department medics.

Officers arrived shortly before 4 a.m. and found the victim had suffered a significant head injury. Seattle Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police secured the area whilst detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad began their investigation. Detectives determined a hit-and-run driver had struck the pedestrian.

During the investigation, officers found a vehicle in the area with front-end damage and arrested a 53-year-old man in connection with the incident.

The case highlights ongoing pedestrian safety concerns on major Seattle roadways, particularly during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced. The SR-99 corridor has experienced multiple pedestrian fatalities in recent years.

Police have not disclosed why the pedestrian was on the off-ramp or the circumstances that led to the collision. The arrest suggests investigators were able to quickly identify and locate the suspect vehicle through evidence gathered at the scene.

The Traffic Collision Investigation Squad continues investigating the incident. The suspect’s identity and specific charges have not been released pending further investigation.
