A pickup truck became stuck underneath a tanker truck on Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome, causing lengthy traffic backups.
The incident occurred on I-5, with the pickup truck wedged beneath the tanker in a collision that blocked multiple lanes. Emergency responders worked to extricate the pickup and clear the scene.
Traffic backed up significantly in both directions as crews managed the incident and investigated the circumstances of the crash. The Washington State Patrol responded to the scene along with fire and emergency medical personnel.
The condition of the pickup truck driver and any occupants was not immediately available. The tanker truck’s cargo and whether any hazardous materials were involved was also not immediately clear.
Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays in the area until the vehicles could be removed and the roadway cleared.
The incident near the Tacoma Dome, a major landmark and venue along I-5, affected one of the busiest stretches of highway in the South Sound region, where I-5 serves as the primary north-south corridor for commuters and freight traffic.
Collisions involving commercial trucks, particularly tankers, require specialized response protocols due to the size of the vehicles and potential for hazardous material spills. Even when tankers carry non-hazardous cargo like fuel or food products, the cleanup and vehicle removal can take hours.
Pickup trucks becoming lodged under larger vehicles typically results from following too closely, attempting to change lanes into occupied space, or underestimating stopping distances when traffic slows suddenly—common factors in multi-vehicle crashes on congested highways.
The Tacoma Dome area represents a major bottleneck on I-5 where the highway narrows and exits serve both the stadium and downtown Tacoma, creating conditions where traffic flow can change rapidly and collisions have outsized impacts on regional mobility.
