Pierce County deputies rescued a 5-month-old baby Wednesday morning after the child’s father allegedly strangled the infant’s mother and drove away erratically with the baby sitting in his lap, triggering a search that lasted more than an hour before the suspect was located in Graham.

Deputies were dispatched after a woman reported she had been strangled by her 27-year-old boyfriend, who then took their infant and fled in a vehicle. As authorities searched for the suspect, they learned he had reportedly made suicidal comments, adding additional urgency and caution to the operation.

After locating the vehicle in Graham, deputies conducted the traffic stop carefully given the presence of the baby inside. When ordered out of the car, the man exited while holding the infant. Deputies safely took the child, who was unharmed.

The 27-year-old was arrested on suspicion of first-degree kidnapping, reckless driving, second and fourth-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and felony harassment with threats to kill.
