A Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy collided with another vehicle Saturday evening while responding to an emergency call about a person with a weapon, resulting in one driver being hospitalized.

The incident occurred around 6:18 p.m. as the deputy traveled westbound on 128th Street in Puyallup. A vehicle pulled out from a stop sign at 62nd Avenue East, and the deputy’s vehicle struck the driver’s side of the car.

Emergency responders extracted the driver from the damaged vehicle. The driver remained conscious and stable during transport to a hospital for treatment. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office reported the deputy was not injured in the collision.

The crash occurred while the deputy was en route to a weapons-related emergency call, though details about that incident were not disclosed. Emergency vehicles operating under lights and sirens receive certain traffic privileges but must still navigate intersections safely.

The sheriff’s office traffic unit is investigating the collision to determine factors including speed, visibility, and whether proper emergency vehicle protocols were followed by both the deputy and the civilian driver.

Intersection collisions involving emergency vehicles highlight the risks faced by both first responders and motorists during emergency responses. Drivers approaching intersections are required to yield to emergency vehicles operating with lights and sirens, though visibility and reaction time can complicate these situations.

The investigation will examine whether the civilian driver failed to yield properly at the stop sign or if other factors contributed to the collision. Traffic unit investigators will review evidence including damage patterns, road conditions, and any available witness statements.

No information was released about potential citations or charges pending the investigation’s outcome. Such determinations typically follow completion of traffic unit investigations examining all circumstances surrounding emergency vehicle collisions.
