Effective September 10, 2026. The Seattle Today is published by Granary Holdings LLC. This policy explains what we collect when you read the site, why we collect it, and how you can control it. If anything here is unclear, write to info@theseattletoday.com and a person will answer.
Information you give us
You can read The Seattle Today without telling us anything. You give us information only when you choose to:
- Subscribe to our newsletter. We collect your email address, and any name you supply.
- Contact us through our contact page or by email. We keep what you send so we can reply and, where it concerns a story, so we have a record of the correspondence.
- Leave a comment. We collect the name, email address and any website you enter, plus your IP address, which helps us detect spam.
- Sign in with Google. If you use this option, Google confirms your identity to us and shares your name, email address and profile image. We never receive your Google password.
- Send us a news tip. We treat tips as confidential and do not publish the identity of a tipster without permission.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our server records standard technical information each time a page is requested: IP address, browser and device type, operating system, the page you asked for, the page that referred you, and the time of the request. We use this to keep the site running, diagnose faults and detect abuse.
Cookies and analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which stories are read and how people find us. It sets cookies that record a randomly generated identifier, not your name. We use Google Tag Manager to load it. We do not use Analytics to identify individual readers, and we have not enabled Google Signals advertising features.
We use CookieYes to record your cookie choices. You can change those choices at any time using the consent button on any page. Essential cookies that keep the site working cannot be switched off.
If you would rather block Analytics entirely, Google publishes a browser opt-out add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Newsletter and push notifications
Our newsletter is delivered through Mailchimp, which stores your email address and records whether messages are opened. Every newsletter carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list immediately.
We offer browser push notifications through OneSignal. These arrive only if you accept the browser prompt, and you can revoke permission at any time in your browser settings without affecting anything else on the site.
Advertising and sponsored content
We sell advertising and produce sponsored features through Seattle Today Studio. All paid content is labeled as sponsored. We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information to advertisers, and advertisers do not receive our reader list.
Who we share information with
We share information only with the services that make the publication work, and only as much as each needs to do its job:
- Google (Analytics, Tag Manager, Search Console, Sign in with Google)
- Mailchimp, for the newsletter
- OneSignal, for push notifications
- Automattic, through Jetpack, for site statistics and security
- Our hosting provider, which stores the site and its server logs
We also disclose information where the law requires it. As a news organization we resist demands for unpublished material and source information wherever we lawfully can.
How long we keep things
Server logs are kept for a short operating period and then discarded. Analytics data follows the retention period set in Google Analytics. Newsletter records are kept until you unsubscribe. Comments and correspondence are kept as part of our editorial record unless you ask us to remove them.
Your choices and rights
You can unsubscribe from the newsletter, turn off push notifications, change your cookie preferences, or ask us what we hold about you. To make a request, email info@theseattletoday.com.
Washington residents have rights under state law, including the My Health My Data Act. We do not collect or infer health information about our readers. Residents of California, the European Union and the United Kingdom have rights of access, correction, deletion and portability, and we honor those requests from any reader regardless of where they live, because drawing lines between readers seemed the wrong instinct for a local newspaper.
Children
The Seattle Today is written for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will delete it.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS and access to our systems is limited to people who need it. No website can promise perfect security, but we take reasonable measures and we will tell readers promptly if a breach affects them.
Corrections and editorial matters
This policy covers data. If you want a factual error corrected, that is a separate and equally serious matter: write to info@theseattletoday.com with the story and the error, and we will look into it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle reader information, we will update this page and change the effective date above.
