Redmond police responded to a tense situation Tuesday night after receiving reports of three teenage boys in ski masks and dark clothing pointing what appeared to be guns at people and vehicles in a downtown area.
Around 9 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of 161st Ave NE after a caller reported the teenagers in the bustling area. A Drone as First Responder was deployed, providing live aerial coverage to officers on the ground. The drone pilot observed one teen carrying what appeared to be a rifle in a downtown park.
As officers arrived, the teen was seen dropping the gun into a flower bed. The Redmond Police Department said real-time aerial awareness allowed officers to safely approach the teens, minimizing risk and ensuring safety for all involved. Officers detained the three teens and later released them to their parents.

The firearms were identified as airsoft guns, which closely resembled real weapons and were perceived as potentially harmful, prompting public concern and the subsequent police response. Authorities remind the public that displaying realistic replicas or airsoft guns in public is dangerous and can lead to serious consequences.
The incident highlights the risk of brandishing realistic-looking toy guns in public spaces. Officers responding to reports of armed individuals must treat the threat as real until proven otherwise, creating situations where misunderstandings could escalate dangerously. Community members are urged to discuss the risks with youth to help maintain safety.
