Renton Police officers are now equipped with real-time language translation capabilities built directly into their body cameras, a tool the department says will allow officers to communicate across 56 languages during encounters with residents and visitors who do not speak English.
The feature activates with the push of a button and is designed to eliminate delays during interactions where a language barrier might otherwise create confusion or escalate tension. Officer Jessie VanderHoek said the technology helps officers “quickly respond to and calm situations” on the spot, removing the need to wait for an interpreter or relay information through a third party.
