Russell Wilson, the quarterback who delivered Seattle its only Super Bowl championship and spent a decade defining Seahawks football, has officially announced his retirement from the NFL and will join CBS Sports as an analyst on The NFL Today.

Wilson made the announcement Wednesday in a video posted to his social media accounts. “As I enter this next chapter with CBS Sports and the NFL Today, I’m so blessed to continue doing what I love most, being around the greatest game in the world,” Wilson said.

The 10-time Pro Bowler played 14 seasons in the NFL, spending the defining decade of his career in Seattle before stints with the Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New York Giants. He finished his playing career having thrown for 46,966 yards, 353 touchdowns, and 114 interceptions. Wilson led the league in passer rating in 2015 and in touchdown passes in 2017. He earned a second-team All-Pro selection in 2019 and was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year for 2020. He leaves Seattle as the most decorated quarterback in franchise history.

Wilson will step into the analyst role previously held by Matt Ryan, who departed The NFL Today after two seasons to become president of football operations for the Atlanta Falcons.

For Seattle fans, Wilson’s retirement closes a chapter that stretches from his arrival as a third-round pick in 2012 through the Super Bowl XLVIII victory, the heartbreaking Super Bowl XLIX finish, and years of playoff runs that made the Seahawks one of the defining franchises of the decade. His number retirement at Lumen Field now feels like a matter of when, not if.
