Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has completed a transformative two-year construction project that nearly triples the size of Concourse C and turns what was a standard transit corridor into a space designed to celebrate the Pacific Northwest, with the new terminal opening to travellers today at 4 a.m.

Port of Seattle officials debuted the Concourse C expansion on Wednesday, revealing a project that expanded the terminal from 81,000 square feet to nearly 230,000 square feet by literally raising the roof of the existing structure and building four new floors above it. The challenge of building upward rather than outward was driven by the airport’s constrained footprint. Sea-Tac is the 11th busiest airport in the United States but operates on one of the smallest physical footprints of any large-hub airport in the country.

“The challenge here at SEA is we are one of the smallest footprint large-hub airports,” said Port of Seattle Commission President Ryan Calkins. “So, we’ve got a really constrained footprint to work with, and yet we built this four-story structure to allow for as many airport dining and retail options as possible.”

The design centres on a Pacific Northwest aesthetic rooted in the region’s natural environment. The architectural focal point of the expanded concourse is Tree at C, a dramatic installation designed to evoke a forest canopy. Local artists and imagery of the Pacific Northwest outdoors are featured throughout the space.

“You feel like you’re in a luxury space,” Calkins said. “Quite honestly, it’s breathtaking in here.” Wendy Reiter, managing director of aviation for Sea-Tac, said she hopes the design communicates something deeper than a terminal upgrade. “I hope that when you’re in the space, you feel the decades of work that is happening at this airport,” Reiter said.

The new concourse introduces a range of dining and retail options including Great State Burger, Olympia Coffee, Seattle Macaron Co., Nanny’s BBQ, Buffalo Wild Wings Go, Chili’s, Bell St. Landing by Hudson, Bite Society, Wanderlust, and Port of Subs. “The cookies, the burgers, so things they would experience if they went downtown,” Reiter said.

Port officials confirmed the expansion was completed on budget and on schedule, with the timing aligning with one of the busiest travel periods in the airport’s history. Seattle is preparing to host six FIFA World Cup matches beginning this weekend, with hundreds of thousands of international visitors expected to pass through Sea-Tac over the coming weeks alongside the usual surge of summer tourism.
