A deadly multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 near Mount Vernon late Saturday night claimed the life of a Seattle man and left an 18-year-old woman hospitalized.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. when a vehicle struck a cable barrier and came to a stop in the second southbound lane. Moments later, a second vehicle, driven by a 39-year-old man, collided with the disabled car and came to rest facing the wrong direction. A third vehicle then crashed into the second, escalating the incident into a pileup.

Emergency responders shut down the affected stretch of the interstate as they worked to assist the victims. The driver of the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, while his young passenger was transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities have not released details about her condition.

No additional injuries were reported, according to Dubin Law Office News.

Preliminary investigations suggest driver inattention contributed to the crash, WSP said. It remains unclear whether charges will be filed against the driver of the third vehicle, a Volkswagen, which was involved in the final collision, as reported by KIRO 7.

The investigation into the tragic accident is ongoing.
