Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell is calling on qualified community members to apply for four open positions on the city’s Landmarks Preservation Board—an influential body dedicated to protecting and preserving the city’s historic and architectural heritage.

According to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, the current vacancies include roles for an at-large representative, a historian, a finance professional, and a structural engineer. The board, composed of 12 volunteer members, plays a pivotal role in designating local landmarks and reviewing proposed changes to historic properties across Seattle.

The board’s membership is intentionally diverse, with representation from sectors such as architecture, engineering, real estate, urban planning, and finance. One seat is also reserved for a young adult—between the ages of 18 and 29—through the city’s “Get Engaged” civic leadership initiative.

While board service is voluntary and unpaid, members are expected to dedicate approximately 10 hours per month. Meetings take place on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 3:30 p.m.

Mayoral appointees must be confirmed by the Seattle City Council before officially joining the board.

Seattle residents with a passion for historic preservation and a commitment to civic service are encouraged to apply. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest and a current resume via email to Erin Doherty at Erin.Doherty@seattle.gov by May 19, 2025. Mailed submissions are also accepted and can be addressed to:

Landmarks Preservation Board Coordinator
Seattle Department of Neighborhoods
P.O. Box 94649, Seattle, WA 98124-4649

This recruitment offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of Seattle’s built environment while preserving its past.
