Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is calling for a major reset of the city’s road safety efforts, saying more needs to be done to prevent traffic deaths and serious injuries. The move comes as the city continues to see a troubling number of fatal crashes despite years of work under its Vision Zero program.
Under a new executive order, city officials will speed up safety upgrades on some of Seattle’s most dangerous streets. Planned improvements include safer pedestrian crossings, additional protected bike lanes, better lighting and visibility at intersections, and other measures designed to slow traffic and reduce crashes.
The mayor is also pushing for closer collaboration across city departments, bringing together transportation planners, traffic engineers, emergency responders and law enforcement to identify problems and deliver solutions more quickly.
Wilson said every traffic death is preventable and that the city must act with greater urgency. The renewed effort is aimed at getting proven safety projects built faster and moving Seattle closer to its goal of eliminating serious and fatal crashes on city streets by 2030.
