Jolene Louis Rodriguez, 45, is charged with one count of first-degree murder with premeditated intent following the death of her 4-year-old son.

A Seattle mother is accused of stabbing her young son multiple times in the chest, hands and leg, then leaving him to die in a bathtub, according to charging documents from the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

Jolene Louis Rodriguez, also known as Jolene Louis Evans, is charged with one count of first-degree murder with premeditated intent following the death of her 4-year-old son. If convicted, she could face life in prison.

Rodriguez remains in jail on $5 million bail; her arraignment is set for Thursday, October 23.

The 4-year-old boy’s father went to the Cedar Crossing Apartments on October 16 after Rodriguez said she attempted suicide, court documents state. Inside, the man found his son lying facedown in a bathtub of bloody water and he called 911.

Seattle police officers responded and ordered 45-year-old Rodriguez out of the apartment, arresting her. She reportedly told officers, “they made me do it” and that “he’s gone.”

When officers picked up the boy from the bathtub, a chef’s knife fell from his body, court documents state. A paring knife was later found wrapped in a towel in the bathtub.

As Seattle Fire Department crews were attempting to save the child, Rodriguez said “they can’t help him … it’s been too long,” documents state. Neighbors told police the boy had autism and was non-verbal.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office found the boy was stabbed three times in the chest, one of which punctured his lung. The boy also had several stab wounds to his hands and multiple injuries to his Achilles tendon as if someone was “sawing away” at his heel, documents state.

However, these injuries occurred before the boy died, documents state.

Medical examiners reported the boy would have died within an hour, “which would have provided [Rodriguez] plenty of time to call for help and get her 4-year-old son medical attention.”

Neighbors held a candlelight vigil on Sunday. Many recalled seeing the boy around the apartment complex.

“We can’t even try to understand it, but we can at least come together to try and heal,” said Taner Starks, who helped organize the vigil with other residents.

Rodriguez’s statement that “they made me do it” suggests possible auditory hallucinations or command delusions characteristic of severe mental illness, a critical factor that could influence criminal responsibility determinations and whether she understood the wrongfulness of her actions.

The boy’s autism and nonverbal status places him among the most vulnerable children, completely dependent on caregivers for protection and unable to call for help or communicate distress during the attack.

The multiple defensive wounds to the child’s hands indicate he attempted to protect himself during the stabbing, demonstrating consciousness and awareness during the prolonged assault that medical examiners estimate lasted long enough for him to survive an hour afterward.

The “sawing away” at the boy’s Achilles tendon represents particularly cruel injury suggesting intent to incapacitate or inflict suffering beyond what was necessary to cause death, potentially supporting premeditation charges rather than heat-of-passion arguments.

The father’s response to Rodriguez’s suicide claim rather than immediately checking on the child reflects possible manipulation by Rodriguez to delay discovery until she believed the boy would be beyond救助 救助, though the timeline remains unclear from court documents.

The $5 million bail amount is extraordinarily high, intended to ensure Rodriguez remains incarcerated pending trial given the severity of charges and potential life sentence that creates flight risk concerns.

Cedar Crossing Apartments’ location in North Seattle near Roosevelt Way Northeast places the tragedy in a residential neighborhood where the candlelight vigil demonstrates community trauma from violence occurring in their midst.

First-degree murder with premeditation charges require prosecutors to prove Rodriguez planned the killing in advance rather than acting impulsively, a high evidentiary bar that the multiple weapons and extended timeline may help establish.

The King County Medical Examiner’s finding that Rodriguez had “plenty of time” to seek help but chose not to supports aggravated murder elements where defendants allow victims to die rather than seeking medical intervention after initial violence.
