Seattle Public Safety Chair Slams Mayor Over Shooting Response, Demands Clear Safety Plan

Seattle City Council member Bob Kettle and chair of the Public Safety Committee, criticized Mayor Katie Wilson for not presenting what he calls a comprehensive public safety plan nearly four weeks after a deadly shooting at Seattle Center during the Bite of Seattle festival. His comments come as the mayor is facing a recall effort and dwindling public confidence in her handling of public safety issues.

Kettle also questioned the city’s response to the shooting, and he raised concerns about whether the mayor’s office properly coordinated with leaders of police, fire and emergency management. He has called for more transparency, including a detailed timeline of the actions the mayor took the night of the incident.

Mayor Wilson said she is relying on an ongoing Office of Inspector General review to look at the city’s response and provide a transparent account of what happened. She declined to comment on the lack of arrests, deferring questions to the Seattle Police Department, while a City Council hearing is expected to further examine the response and decision-making around the shooting.
