Seattle City Council has unanimously approved a ban on what is popularly titled “junk fees” charged to renters, a move city leaders say will bring greater transparency to the cost of housing. The new law is set to take effect from July 1, 2027.
The legislation targets additional charges that can drive up the cost of renting, including certain administrative, package and pet-related fees. Mayor Katie Wilson said the measure is aimed at preventing renters from being hit with unexpected costs beyond their advertised rent.
