A 39-year-old Seattle woman was arrested Monday after witnesses reported she blew drug smoke into an infant’s face and “tossed the baby into her stroller,” the Seattle Police Department announced.
Witnesses observed the woman in the 3600 block of 33rd Avenue South “smoking narcotics out of tinfoil and blowing the smoke into the baby’s face.”
SPD officers found the woman lying on the ground holding the baby around 6:30 p.m. The child wore no clothing on its legs and did not appear to be moving. The suspect had tinfoil wrapped around her, with a lighter and tinfoil bearing burn marks allegedly from narcotics use inside her bag.
Officers nudged the suspect awake, and the baby began kicking its legs, appearing conscious. Seattle Fire Department personnel arrived and evaluated the child for injuries. The woman threatened to assault firefighters.
The suspect was informed that multiple 911 calls requested first responders check on her. She declined SFD assistance, later becoming upset and combative.
The woman, who has one metal prosthetic leg, kicked an officer in the leg several times, causing minor injuries.
The suspect was arrested for investigation of reckless endangerment and assault. SPD noted she had multiple pending arrest warrants for assault, property destruction, vehicle trespassing, theft, and making a false statement to a public servant.
Officers booked the suspect into King County Jail, and the infant was placed in Child Protective Services care.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about drug use and child endangerment in Seattle, where substance abuse and child welfare cases increasingly intersect, creating complex challenges for law enforcement and social services.
