Public Health Seattle-King County has issued swimming advisories for six popular beaches across the region due to elevated bacterial contamination and a sewage spill.

Five beaches face closures due to high bacterial levels: Madison Park in Seattle, Houghton Beach in Kirkland, Idylwood Beach in Redmond, Luther Burbank Park Beach on Mercer Island, and Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park in Renton.

Mount Baker Beach in Seattle faces a separate closure following a sewage spill that has contaminated the swimming area.

King County conducts routine water quality testing at these recreational sites to monitor bacterial levels that could pose health risks to swimmers. The beaches will remain closed until testing confirms bacteria concentrations have returned to safe standards.

The advisories affect some of the region’s most popular swimming destinations during late summer weather. Swimmers who ignore the warnings risk exposure to harmful bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and skin infections.

Officials have not specified the duration of the closures, which depend on natural bacterial die-off and resolution of the sewage contamination at Mount Baker Beach. King County will continue monitoring water quality and announce reopenings as conditions improve.

Residents planning beach visits should check current advisories before travelling to these locations, as conditions can change rapidly based on weather, runoff, and other environmental factors affecting water quality.
