A small aircraft carrying three people crashed in a Williston, Florida peanut field Sunday, with the Levy County Sheriff’s Office reporting no survivors have been found.
The pilot had filed a flight plan to land in Williston for refueling during a return trip from Kentucky, according to LCSO.
A witness stated that the plane exploded upon impact with the peanut field. The witness also reported another aircraft was in the area and attempted landing but circled until first responders arrived.
The Levy County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash circumstances. Details about the aircraft type, departure location in Kentucky, and final destination were not immediately available.
Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board investigators typically respond to fatal aircraft accidents to determine contributing factors including mechanical failure, weather conditions, and pilot error.
Small aircraft refueling stops are common during long-distance flights, particularly for planes with limited fuel capacity requiring intermediate stops between departure and destination points.
The crash adds to aviation safety concerns in Florida, which has significant general aviation traffic due to favorable weather conditions, numerous small airports, and high numbers of private pilots and aircraft owners.
