Seattle officially marked the start of its FIFA World Cup 2026 hosting duties on Thursday with a ceremonial flag raising atop the Space Needle, signalling the beginning of a tournament expected to generate $845 million in economic impact for King County and bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region over the coming weeks.
The Seattle FIFA World Cup 2026 Local Organizing Committee hosted the ceremony alongside a coalition of regional supporters that helped make the city’s hosting role possible, including Alaska Airlines, Amazon, Boeing, Emerald Queen Casino, Microsoft, the Port of Seattle, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, and the University of Washington. SeattleFWC26 CEO Peter Tomozawa said the moment represented years of preparation reaching its culmination. “There is no better way to kick off the World Cup than crowning Seattle’s most iconic landmark with the symbol of the beautiful game,” Tomozawa said. “Our city, our region has been counting down to this moment. We are ready to welcome the world.”
Seattle will host six FIFA World Cup matches at Seattle Stadium over the coming weeks, with the first match between Belgium and Egypt scheduled for 15 June. The tournament is expected to support thousands of jobs and create lasting benefits for businesses, workers, and neighborhoods across the region, alongside fan celebrations, cultural programming, and community events designed to showcase the area to a global audience.
Several of the host city supporters offered their own perspective on what the moment means for the region. Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci framed the airline’s role as central to its identity as Seattle’s hometown carrier. “As Seattle’s hometown airline, this is what we do every day, connect our guests to the world and bring people and places closer together,” Minicucci said. Boeing Vice President Bill McSherry called the tournament an opportunity to showcase the region’s global connections, while Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith said the lasting legacy of the tournament would be measured “not just in moments on the field, but in what we build here long after it’s over.”
Puyallup Tribal Council Chairman Bill Sterud highlighted the tribe’s distinction as the first sovereign Indigenous nation to serve as an official Host City Supporter for the tournament. “This moment reflects the power of partnership and community,” Sterud said. “We are proud to host a FIFA World Cup experience that celebrates the welcoming and generous traditions of our people while building opportunities that will benefit future generations.” University of Washington President Robert J. Jones added that the university’s role reflects its broader mission of advancing knowledge and fostering inclusion across the Pacific Northwest.
Excitement continues to build ahead of the opening match. Seattle Soccer House, the city’s premier downtown destination for fans and visitors during the tournament, opens 12 June. Fans planning to attend matches at Seattle Stadium are encouraged to use light rail, bus, walking, biking, or water transportation, with downtown Seattle expected to be one of the most transit-dense environments in the city’s history on match days. Full transportation planning information, including shuttle routes and street closure windows, is available at seattlefwc26.org/transportation, and fans can join the official FIFA World Cup 2026 Fan Info WhatsApp channel for Seattle for real-time updates throughout the tournament.
