A devastating fire erupted at a fourplex located at 2917 East Broad Avenue in Spokane’s Hillyard neighborhood, resulting in one man being hospitalized in serious condition and displacing eight residents, including five adults and three children. The fire, which broke out around 4:30 p.m., prompted a rapid emergency response from the Spokane Fire Department as heavy flames engulfed the residential structure.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered intense fire, smoke, and water conditions, necessitating the declaration of a second alarm to bring additional firefighting crews and resources to the scene. Despite their swift efforts, the fire caused extensive damage throughout the entire building, rendering it uninhabitable. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes, and no injuries to first responders were reported.

One adult male was transported from the scene in serious condition and remains hospitalized. The identities of the injured man and the displaced residents have not been released as of this report. The American Red Cross responded promptly, providing emergency shelter and support to the displaced families, who are now in need of longer-term assistance as recovery efforts begin.

The Spokane Fire Department’s Special Investigation Unit has launched a thorough investigation into the cause of the blaze. As of now, no definitive conclusion has been reached regarding how the fire started. Authorities continue to collect witness statements and forensic evidence to determine the origin and cause of the incident.

This residential fire highlights the ongoing importance of fire prevention, preparedness, and public awareness. Local fire officials urge all residents to ensure their homes are equipped with functional smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Regular maintenance checks and fire safety drills can significantly reduce the risks and improve outcomes in emergency situations such as this one.

Community organizations and local residents are encouraged to support relief efforts for the affected families. Donations of essential supplies, clothing, and temporary housing support can be directed to agencies coordinating with the American Red Cross or Spokane-area nonprofit services.

Anyone with information that could assist in the ongoing investigation is encouraged to contact the Spokane Fire Department directly. As fire safety continues to be a public concern, this incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of residential fires and the critical need for readiness and community solidarity in times of crisis.
