A devastating wrong-way crash early Sunday morning on State Route 410 left two people dead and another seriously injured in what authorities are calling a suspected DUI incident.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened just before 5 a.m. on the westbound lanes of SR 410, just west of Valley Avenue. Investigators say a woman driving a vehicle the wrong way on the highway struck another car head-on, killing both occupants inside.

The suspect, identified as a woman in her 50s from Kent, was seriously hurt in the crash and transported to a nearby hospital. She has since been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular homicide.

Prior to the crash, troopers had received a report of a driver going the wrong way on State Route 167. Before they could intercept her, the vehicle entered westbound SR 410 heading eastbound, setting the stage for the fatal collision.

“This is a heartbreaking example of how impaired driving can have irreversible consequences,” a WSP spokesperson said Sunday.

The names of the victims have not yet been released as authorities work to notify next of kin.

The collision forced the complete closure of westbound SR 410 in the area. Traffic is being diverted to Valley Avenue, with reentry allowed at Traffic Avenue. Officials warn drivers to expect a prolonged closure as investigators process the scene.

Local authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact the Washington State Patrol.
