Tacoma police have launched a suspicious death investigation after a 12-year-old boy was found unresponsive Friday afternoon in a South Tacoma neighborhood.

Officers responded to reports of an unresponsive child at South 40th Street and South Lawrence Street around 3:00 p.m. Police and firefighters arrived at the scene but determined the child had already died.

Detectives classified the death as suspicious and have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not released additional details about the child’s identity or the specific factors that led investigators to consider the death suspicious.

The intersection where the child was found is located in a residential area of South Tacoma, though police have not disclosed whether the boy was discovered at a residence or in a public area.

Tacoma Police Department’s investigation continues as detectives work to determine the cause and manner of death. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to establish the official cause of death.

The case represents a tragic incident involving a juvenile victim, prompting thorough investigative protocols to ensure all circumstances are properly examined. Police typically classify child deaths as suspicious pending completion of medical examination and investigation.

Authorities have not indicated whether any suspects are being sought in connection with the death or if the investigation has identified any immediate threats to public safety.

The investigation remains active as detectives gather evidence and interview potential witnesses to establish the timeline and circumstances that led to the child’s death.
