A pedestrian who was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle earlier this week has died, leading Tacoma police to reclassify the case as a homicide investigation.

The incident occurred on July 20 near the intersection of East D Street and East 75th Street in Tacoma’s Eastside neighborhood. Officers responding to the scene found the victim suffering from life-threatening injuries and began emergency medical care before Tacoma Fire personnel transported him to a hospital in critical condition.

Authorities said the driver remained at the scene and was taken into custody shortly after the crash. The suspect was initially booked into the Pierce County Jail on a charge of first-degree assault while investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the collision.

After the victim succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, detectives upgraded the investigation to a homicide case. Police are now working with the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office to determine the appropriate charges in light of the victim’s death.

The investigation remains active, and officials are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact law enforcement.
