Two people died and five were injured in a shooting at Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass, Texas, late Saturday night, with the suspect captured nearly eight hours later following a police pursuit 180 miles away.
A large crowd had gathered for a raffle event at the casino on the Kickapoo reservation when gunfire erupted before midnight September 27. The shooter fled in a black pickup truck before authorities arrived.
Keryan Jones, 34, was apprehended near Stockdale in Wilson County around 8 a.m. Sunday after a multi-agency pursuit, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office announced September 28. Stockdale is approximately 180 miles northeast of Eagle Pass.
Wilson County deputies joined an ongoing pursuit involving state troopers, who partially disabled the suspect’s vehicle with gunfire at a gas station. “The suspect was successfully taken into custody after a successful PIT maneuver and Taser deployment,” the sheriff’s office stated.
The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas Police Department is working to extradite Jones back to Eagle Pass to face charges. As of Sunday afternoon, authorities had not disclosed a motive for the shooting.
“On behalf of the Eagle Pass Police Department, our hearts go out to the families and friends of those lost in this tragic incident,” the department said. “We continue to keep the injured in our thoughts and prayers and we ask our lord to bless and guide the hands of those working to bring them healing and comfort.”
The shooting occurred at a tribal casino facility, raising jurisdictional questions typical of crimes on Native American reservations. The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas operates the Lucky Eagle Casino as part of its sovereign territory.
The eight-hour manhunt covered significant distance across rural Texas, requiring coordination between tribal police, local law enforcement, and state troopers. The pursuit’s conclusion involved tactical maneuvers including vehicle disabling and less-lethal force deployment.
Eagle Pass is located approximately 140 miles southwest of San Antonio along the U.S.-Mexico border. The city has a population of roughly 29,000 residents.
Casino shootings represent relatively rare but high-casualty events due to large gatherings in enclosed spaces. The incident occurred during a special event that likely drew larger crowds than typical operating hours.
Authorities have not released victim identities or conditions of the five injured individuals pending family notifications and ongoing medical treatment.
