Three firefighters were injured Wednesday afternoon after a home exploded in the Greenbank area of Whidbey Island shortly after they arrived on scene, destroying the house completely, igniting a neighbor’s home, and damaging a third nearby property.

The incident was reported at approximately 2:45 p.m. at a residence along South Smugglers Cove Road near Lagoon Point Road. Firefighters initially responded to a 911 call reporting a house fire, and the home exploded shortly after crews arrived. Two fire chiefs and one firefighter were injured in the blast and transported to local hospitals. All three are in stable condition.

Two civilians may also have been injured in the explosion, but both self-transported to hospital before first responders could evaluate them on scene.

A witness at the scene, who sent photos and video from nearby, said the explosion sounded like a stockpile of fireworks detonating. He described white smoke emerging from the home before a series of sporadic detonations continued for at least 30 minutes into the fire. One particularly powerful blast, he said, was strong enough to shake the ground.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the Region 3 Arson Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
