Two people are dead after a small plane crashed into the Columbia River near Pasco, Washington on Wednesday afternoon, striking a transmission line on the way down, knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses, and igniting a fire in a nearby open field.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. near the Cable Bridge along the Columbia River. The plane hit a transmission line before going down, causing widespread power outages across the surrounding area. The impact also started a fire in an open field adjacent to Riverview Park.

The aircraft came to rest upside down in the river and drifted downstream before crews were able to respond. A crane was used to pull the plane from the water. Two bodies were recovered from the aircraft, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the crash.
