After Uber Eats has agreed to settle allegations that it violated the city’s App-Based Worker Minimum Payment Ordinance, it will also return about $4.4 million to more than 14,000 of its workers as a result. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson announced the agreement, describing it as one of the largest settlements secured by the Seattle Office of Labor Standards (OLS) involving app-based workers.

Uber Eats has agreed to pay $4.39 million in back pay, interest, liquidated damages and civil penalties to 14,4421 workers that were affected, alongside $5,982.90 in fines to the city. The Office of Labor Standards has claimed Uber Eats consistently did not provide minimum payments for any canceled orders when required. This includes cases where workers would go to a pick-up location and report to Uber Eats that an order needed to be canceled for cause.

OLS Director Steven Marchese said the settlement came after additional complaints from earlier resolution relating to Uber Eats. The Office of Labor Standards states that its previous settlement with Uber Eats involved allegations under areas such as minimum payments for any ordinance and the city’s Independent Contractor Protections Ordinance.
